Neoliberalis menghendaki negara tidak berbisnis meski bisnis tersebut menyangkut kekayaan alam negara dan juga menyangkut kebutuhan hidup orang banyak. Oleh karena itu semua BUMN harus dijual atau diprivatisasi ke pihak swasta. Karena swasta Nasional keuangannya terbatas, umumnya yang membelinya adalah pihak asing seperti Indosat dan Telkom yang dijual ke perusahaan asing seperti STT dan Singtel yang ternyata anak perusahaan dari Temasek (BUMN Singapura).
